Spousal sponsorship
Canadian spousal sponsorship serves as the method through which Canadian citizens and permanent residents can facilitate the permanent residency of their partners in Canada. Recognizing the importance of family unity, spousal sponsorship applications are accorded utmost priority within the Canadian immigration system.

Eligibility criteria to sponsor
- You are 18 years of age or older.
- You are either a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident living in Canada, or a person registered under the Canadian Indian Act.
- You either reside in Canada or are a Canadian citizen planning to return to the country.
- You are not currently receiving social assistance for reasons unrelated to a disability.
- You have the financial capacity to provide for your own basic needs, as well as those of your spouse or partner, and, if applicable, any dependent children.
Requirement for the sponsored person (Principal Applicant)
Spouse: You can sponsor the person as your spouse if your marriage is a legally valid civil marriage.
common-law partner (any gender)
You can sponsor the person as your common-law partner (any gender) as long as you’ve been living or have lived with your partner for at least 12 consecutive months in a marriage-like relationship.
A Conjugal Partner:
- A person who is living outside Canada,
- In a conjugal relationship with the sponsor for at least one year where marriage or cohabitation (living together) hasn’t been possible for any reason.
IMMPORTTANT NOTE:
A foreign national shall only be considered a spouse, a common-law partner, or a conjugal partner of a person if the marriage, common-law partnership, or conjugal partnership:
(a) Was not entered into primarily for the purpose of acquiring any status or privilege or
(b) Is genuine.
Below is the list of documents to attach to prove the genuineness of the relationship:
- Joint ownership of residential property or joint residential leases or joint rental agreements listing both the sponsor and the principal applicant.
- Important documents for you and your sponsor showing the same address, such as copies of Government issued identification documents: driver’s licenses, insurance policies, etc.
- Proof that your relationship is recognized by your friends and/or family (e.g., Letters, social media information showing a public relationship, etc.)
- Proof of your sponsor’s visits, such as airline ticket coupons or used boarding passes, photocopies of pages of passport for your sponsor showing entry-exit stamps supporting visits.
Choose the class of application:
Family Class
- The individual you wish to sponsor resides outside of Canada.
- The individual you’re sponsoring currently lives with you in Canada but doesn’t intend to remain in the country during the application processing.
- You intend to appeal the decision if the application is declined.
- You’re sponsoring your conjugal partner or a dependent child.
Spouse or Common-Law Partner in Canada Class
- Reside with you in Canada.
- Possess a valid temporary resident status in Canada, or they are exempt from requiring this status under a public policy.
