Canada Unveils New Category-Based Selection for Agricultural Workers

(Canada’s Express Entry Revolutionizes Immigration for Agri-Food Workers by inviting candidates with experience in the agriculture and agri-food sector)

On September 27, 2023, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada introduced some changes to its Express Entry system. These changes are designed to address labor shortages and support economic goals by inviting candidates with specific work experience or French language ability to apply for permanent residence.

The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, and the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, jointly announced a significant milestone in Canada’s immigration landscape. The primary focus of this transformative change is to invite candidates with experience in the agriculture and agri-food sector to apply for permanent residency.

This initiative specifically targets professionals such as agricultural service contractors, farm supervisors, and retail and wholesale butchers. By doing so, Canada aims to fulfill the increasing demand for skilled talent in these crucial roles across the country.

Canada’s commitment to attracting top global talent and addressing the needs of the agriculture and agri-food sectors is unwavering. Through category-based selection and the Agri-Food Pilot, the nation is taking significant strides in supporting its economy. This new approach will continue throughout the year, working alongside general and program-specific invitation rounds.
